The number of businesses owned by black women in the United States has skyrocketed, according to data from American Express OPEN.
There are now 1.3 million black women-owned firms, an increase of 322% between 1997 and 2015. This accelerated rate for black female entrepreneurs is directly compared to a 235% increase among all minority women-owned firms, and a 74% increase in the number of all women-owned firms.
Furthermore, for black women-owned firms in particular, while women overall own 30% of all firms in the US, black women own fully 49% of all black-owned firms in the country.
