Why did you decide to start Posh Beauty?
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved beauty and fashion. Whenever we visited my aunt, who was a hairdresser, I used to enjoy sitting for hours watching her style women’s hair.
Even as I grew into adulthood and began working in the technology industry, I was still intrigued and maintained a fascination with the beauty industry. I also saw a need for a centralized solution for salons to find clients and employees, and for clients to be able to find tips and advice.
So, I decided to connect my love for technology and beauty to start PoshBeauty.com.
What was your career path prior to launching your first business?
After college, I worked at Unisys as a software engineer. Then I later moved on to work for Accenture for eight years as software engineer where I gained a lot of experience with software architecture, designing, programming and management.
What are you currently working on?
My team and I are currently working on launching a Posh Beauty mobile app in August. This will be available for both iPhone and Android phone users.
What do you love the most about running your own business?
I like that you have the creative freedom to implement things that you think are cool. I also like that you also have the freedom to take more risks.
What is the toughest part when it comes to running your own business?
Everything falls on your shoulders. You have to be in control and aware of all the moving parts of your business. The vision and decisions come from you. You have a team that is depending on you, so you always have to stay motivated.
Which business resources have you found the most useful?
Meetup.com and EventBrite.com are great for networking or meeting other entrepreneurs in your city.
Upwork.com is a good resource if you are looking for freelancers. Local colleges and universities are good resources if you are looking for students for internships or work experience.
What has been your biggest achievement so far at Posh Beauty?
Securing loyal users and followers.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering launching a start-up?
Just do it. You don’t have to have all the answers. You will gain clarity and opportunities after every step and level you reach in your business. It’s ok to do it while you’re afraid of failing. Next, surround yourself with other people who have a start-up or a successful business. Finally, don’t be afraid or too proud to ask for help.
