What was it like growing up in America?
I was born in New York, but grew up between North Carolina and Texas. After graduating from college in Florida, I moved back to New York and lived there for 10 years before moving to London.

Where did you go to school and what were your favourite subjects?
I have an undergraduate degree in journalism from Florida A&M University and a Masters degree in Transnational Communications and Global Media from Goldsmiths, University of London.

My favourite subjects were always around some form of communication—so I was always good at English. Throughout school I was on the debate team, I hosted a morning television news show at my high school, worked on the Yearbook staff and later went on to host a weekly radio show while at university.

What made you want to study at a British university?
I wanted to experience life outside of the US and thought that getting a Masters in London would be a good place to start.

Are American and British universities very different?
Well, my experiences were very different. I went to a historically Black college/university for undergrad, which is a very different experience from other universities in the US.

Other basic differences between US and British universities are that our schools are much more expensive and the Masters programmes are a minimum of 2 years, where here it’s only one.

What or who inspires you?
I love being around intelligent and driven people. Great conversations on making a difference are always inspiring.

I also love being around smart young people who are planting seeds to run the world that we will all live in over the next few years. They give me the most inspiration.

Was it always your ambition to work in media?
I love the ability to educate and influence. Media is a very powerful tool. If used responsibly and well, it can do wonders.

Have you had any other jobs during your career?
In addition to being co-founder of Parlourmagazine.com, I also work full-time as a public relations and marketing consultant.

Most of my career has been in PR and marketing. I’ve worked for companies such as Complex magazine, Men’s Fitness magazine, TRACE magazine and a number of PR agencies as well.

Sherry, is there anything else you’d like to share?
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak with you guys. Talk about inspiration—I am always inspired by the students from St. Matthew Academy. You guys are well on your way to doing some amazing things in the years to come. I just can’t wait to see it!
